Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal length for a title tag?
Aim for roughly 50–60 characters, or under about 600 pixels wide. Longer titles get cut off with an ellipsis (…) in Google’s search results.
What is the ideal length for a meta description?
Aim for roughly 120–158 characters, or under about 960 pixels wide. Google sometimes rewrites descriptions, but staying within this range reduces the chance of truncation.
Why does it measure pixels instead of just characters?
Google truncates snippets based on pixel width, not character count, because letters like “i” and “w” take up very different amounts of space. Measuring pixel width gives a more accurate picture of what will actually be cut off.
Is my title and description sent anywhere?
No. Everything — character counts, pixel measurements, and the search preview — is calculated locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded.
